Our record describes it as a very old one, and her early work has a character distinct enough that collectors learn to read it. Before bonsai she worked for a company in Red Wing that specialised in teapots, years of shaping vessels for the table long before any of them held a tree, and that grounding in functional pottery shows in the oldest surviving examples. The early pieces are also where the experimentation lives: more individual detail, more one-off decisions, fewer pots that resemble each other.

A fine repeated detail runs around the rim, and our record notes every one of them as crisp and undamaged, which on a pot of this age is not a given. The signature is incised rather than stamped. Rayner scratches her name directly into the clay while it is still wet, so the mark varies from pot to pot and is unique to this one. That is the opposite of a chop, which is pressed in and comes out identical across everything a kiln produces. On her earliest work the underside is often the clearest fingerprint of all: hand-formed feet, unevenly spaced drainage holes, a signature cut straight into the surface.

At 13 inches across and 3 inches deep this is a large round with real soil volume, enough for a conifer or a trunk still building root mass. One inch, on a pot fifteen inches long. That is about as shallow as a bonsai container gets, and it narrows what belongs in it considerably. This is a pot for a developed root system that has stopped needing volume, or for a group planting where the soil is spread wide and thin across the whole tray. The early pieces are where the experimentation lives, made before her reputation caught up with her and demand pushed the work toward more pots, faster, with less deliberation on each one. A thin line runs around the rim here with a fine repeated detail set along it, and our record notes the whole run as undamaged.

The signature is incised, not stamped. She scratches her name into the clay while it is still wet, so the mark is unique to this pot and varies from one piece to the next. A chop is the opposite: pressed in, and identical across everything a kiln makes. The grey here is restrained by her standards, and that is worth saying, because range is the thing collectors talk about most with her. Rather than settling into one glaze and one form the way most potters do over a career, she kept moving, and a quiet piece like this sits at the far end of that range from the ones where greens break over warm gold and rust.

Dimensions
15 × 9 × 1 in

Shape
Oval

Potter
Sara Rayner

Finish
Glazed

Color
Grey

Pot #10010
