There are two jobs a pair of scissors will never do well: taking a knob back flush to the trunk, and cutting through a root plate at repotting. These are the two cutters that fill that gap, and buying them together is how most growers make the jump from beginner tools to real structural work.
The knob cutter's rounded jaw scoops out the stub left behind by a branch removal so the wound heals flat instead of leaving a bump. The root cutter is built for the opposite environment — wet soil, grit, and heavy repeated cuts that dull ordinary steel fast. Both are forged from manganese-infused stainless steel, which is denser than standard stainless and holds a finer edge far longer under exactly that kind of abuse.
