Repotting means cutting through a root mass that's often thicker, denser, and dirtier than anything you're cutting above the soil line — and it's happening at exactly the time of year when your tools are working hardest. Use a branch cutter down there, and you'll dull a jaw shaped for something else entirely.
Why do roots need a different jaw?
A root cutter uses a straight, flat-ground blade rather than the concave jaw you'd use on a branch. Roots don't need the same flush-healing hollow that a trunk or branch cut does — what they need is a clean, straight severing cut that doesn't crush or fray the root ball, since a ragged cut root is slower to callus and more vulnerable to rot in fresh soil. The flat-bladed shape is designed specifically for that straight-through cut, not for carving a hollow as a concave cutter does.
Standing up to soil and grit
Root work is dirtier than any other job in the kit — you're cutting through soil, old root-bound mats, and grit that would grind down a lesser edge fast. A manganese-alloyed stainless blade holds its edge through that abrasion better than a softer steel would, and because it's stainless, a season of repotting followed by a quick rinse doesn't leave you managing rust on top of everything else repotting season already demands. That combination is what lets one root cutter get through an entire repotting season on a real collection without needing a resharpen partway through.
When to reach for it
Any time you're repotting — bare-rooting, reducing a root mass, or cleaning up circling roots before setting a tree back into fresh soil. It's not a tool most growers use outside of that window, but during it, there's no real substitute.
