Details

Suzuki Suzan built his reputation on two forms, and this is one of them. The riveted drum, with the rivets set by hand around a flat rim, is the piece of vocabulary collectors picture when the name comes up, alongside the bamboo banding he is credited with designing. Suzan worked in the suburbs of Nagoya rather than Tokoname, which meant the clay was a problem he had to solve for himself. He imported it from China and spent years refining a body that reads soft and porous to the eye, holds patina over decades, and weighs noticeably less than its size suggests. That last quality is still the fastest way to identify one. You get your hands under the pot expecting exhibition weight, and it is not there.

Every pot that left his kiln was made to order, one commission at a time. That is why there is no quality gradient in his work, and why the supply is genuinely finite: there was never a bin of identical examples. The rivets on this drum are doing structural work as much as decorative, which is the principle running through everything he made. Nothing on a Suzan is there that is not also holding the pot together. Our record notes the chop on the underside as a rare one.

This is a large drum, built as a display pot rather than a training one. Unglazed is the convention for pines, junipers and anything with bark worth looking at, because the clay recedes and lets the tree carry the composition. A drum at this scale wants a tree with real presence, and the flat rim gives a clean horizontal to set the silhouette against.
