16x14x6 Inch Sara Rayner Oval Bonsai Pot #10007 – Knob Feet, Unglazed, Nail Signed

An unglazed oval from Sara Rayner, left bare so the clay does the talking. A rustic pattern is stamped into the side wall, and the rim runs in the crisp, unwavering line her work is known for. It stands on knob feet. Unglazed pots like this one recede behind a tree rather than competing with it, which is why they remain the default choice for conifers and for anything with interesting bark.

It is nail signed, which means the signature is scratched into the underside by hand with a pointed tool while the clay is still leather-hard. There is no stamp or pressed emblem to look for. Rayner signs her own pieces this way, so the mark is unique to the pot rather than repeated across a batch.

This one carries some history. It was collected in the early 1990s by Bill Spain, a bonsai artist from Lyons, Colorado, who bought Rayner's pots in volume at a time when few people outside the Midwest knew her name. Pots from that period are increasingly hard to find in good condition.

At 16 by 14 inches and 6 inches deep, this is a large pot with real root volume. The depth suits a developed root system rather than a recently collected tree, and the oval softens the mass of a heavy trunk. It will take a mature pine or juniper, or a large deciduous specimen where you want the pot to sit quietly underneath.
