18 Inch Diameter x 3 Inch Deep Suzuki Suzan Round Bonsai Pot #270 – Smooth Texture, Unglazed, Chop Mark
Details
Eighteen inches across, and it will not weigh what you expect. That is the first thing a Suzuki Suzan pot does, and at this size it does it hardest. You see a round this wide and your body runs the math on exhibition weight before your brain catches up. Then you lift it, and the weight is not where it is supposed to be.
The reason is the clay. Suzan worked in the suburbs of Nagoya rather than Tokoname, so he did not have one of Japan's best ceramic deposits on his doorstep and had to answer the clay question himself. He imported it from China and spent years refining a body nobody else was using, chasing strength without the mass that normally comes with it. What he arrived at reads soft, porous and warm to the eye, holds patina beautifully over decades, and weighs a fraction of what it looks like it should. Our record describes the colour in this one as having incredible depth, which is that clay doing its work across years of use rather than a glaze doing it on day one. Every pot that left his kiln was made to order, one commission at a time, which is why there is no quality gradient in his work and no bin of identical examples to compare against.
At 18 inches across and 3 inches deep this is a wide, shallow round, and that proportion asks for a developed root system spread sideways rather than a tree still building depth. Mature deciduous material or a group planting, rather than a conifer that wants soil mass. Unglazed is the convention for trees with bark worth looking at, and on a Suzan the clay is the argument rather than the backdrop.
