18x16x4 Inch Sara Rayner Rectangle Bonsai Pot #10009 – Rounded Corners, Yellow, Nail Signed
Details
A large glazed rectangle from Sara Rayner in a bright yellow fired to a burnt, crisped surface rather than left smooth. That texture is the point. A flat yellow at this size would read as a painted box. Broken and crisped, it catches light differently across the wall and gives an 18 inch pot something to look at.
The corners are rounded rather than cut and the rim is flat and turns inward, so the hard edges a rectangle usually has are softened at every point. That is Rayner inverting the usual relationship. In Japan the pot is built to disappear behind the tree; she treats the pot as the furniture and the tree as the accent to it. It is a controversial idea in parts of the bonsai world, and it is exactly why collectors chase her work. She signs by hand, the mark scratched into the clay.
At 18 by 16 inches and 4 inches deep this is a large pot with a nearly square footprint, which reads less formally than an elongated rectangle and works from more than one side. Four inches suits a tree whose roots are established. A yellow this assertive is conventionally paired with deciduous, flowering or fruiting material, where it can answer the foliage; it will dominate a conifer rather than recede behind one.
