6x4x2.5 Inch Sara Rayner Oval Bonsai Pot #10006 – Rustic Flat Rim, Unglazed, Nail Signed

A small unglazed oval from Sara Rayner with a deep rustic imprint pressed into the side and a copper colour burnt into the clay around it. That copper is a firing result rather than a glaze, which is why it sits in the surface instead of on top of it, and it is the kind of one-off outcome her work is full of.

Range is what separates Rayner from nearly every other potter in the field. Most settle into a signature over a career, one glaze or one form that becomes theirs. She refused to, and her catalogue runs in dozens of directions instead, each pot pursuing its own texture and finish. The rim here is left flat and plain so the imprint and the colour carry the piece. She signs by hand, the mark scratched directly into the clay.

At 6 by 4 inches and 2.5 inches deep this is small and shallow, best suited to a tree whose roots are already developed. It works as a shohin display pot or as an accent planting beside something larger. Unglazed and rustic-surfaced, it sits comfortably with a conifer, or with deciduous material that has bark worth looking at.
