Details
If Bushuan had a motto as a potter it was colour, and this is the pot where that shows plainly. Most of his work leads with green and keeps the purples, yellows and blues working underneath it. Here several colours hold the surface at once. He reproduced Cantonese green, oribe and chicken-blood red with a confidence few other potters bring to that many colours in one body of work, and a multi-coloured piece is that ambition compressed into a single pot.
It was hand formed, glazed underneath as well as over, and it stands on bold feet cut to carry the weight of a heavy glaze rather than disappear beneath it. The chop is on the base.
At 7 by 6 inches and 2.5 inches deep this is small shohin scale and shallow for its footprint, so it suits a tree whose roots are already developed. With a glaze this busy the pot will lead the composition. That wants a tree simple enough to let it, or a foliage colour chosen deliberately against it rather than in spite of it.
