Bigei Handcarved Dragon Rectangle Bonsai Pot 12.5" Unglazed

Bigei | Japan | Unglazed | Rectangle | hand carved from a solid block of clay

This one is something else. Bigei is already a name that gets collectors' attention, but this rectangle goes well beyond a standard production piece — it was hand-carved from a solid block of clay, and the dragon motif carved into it puts it in a different category entirely. That's not a stamped or sprigged decoration; someone sat down and worked this clay by hand, and it shows. The carving has the kind of presence that commands attention even before a tree goes in it.

At 12.5" long by 9.5" wide and 4" deep, this is a substantial pot — well-proportioned for a larger shohin or a mid-size composition where you want the container to carry some weight visually. The unglazed surface lets the clay body and the carved work speak for themselves, which on a piece like this is exactly the right call. Both a chop mark and a nail signature are present, so provenance is as solid as it gets for a Bigei piece.
