Details
This one carries a foo dog twice over: a shishi motif worked into the clay, and a foo-dog chop pressed into the base. The shishi is the guardian lion of temple gates, and Bushuan carved them into some of his pots rather than applying them separately. Having the motif answered by the mark is the kind of coherence you only get when one person is doing both.
The glaze is an oribe green drip, built up layer on layer and fired to run. On his best pieces it breaks evenly on every side, right down to the edge of the foot, and that evenness is the clearest sign of control rather than luck: glaze loaded this heavily wants to pool, skip and flood. The feet are step cut with a border, and the pot carries a double chop alongside a nail signature.
At 10.5 by 8.5 inches and 4 inches deep this is larger than most of Bushuan's output, which sat in the shohin and mame range, so a rectangle at this size is a less common find from him. Four inches gives real root volume, which suits a tree carrying weight above the soil, and an oribe green is conventionally paired with deciduous or flowering material where the colour has foliage to answer.
