Gyouzan Nakano Yokizou 1st Gen Vintage Unglazed Rectangle Bonsai Pot
Details
Gyouzan (Nakano Yokizou) | Japan | Unglazed | Rectangle | Bold form, hand placed rivets, Smooth texture
This is a serious pot. A large unglazed rectangle from Gyouzan, nail-signed by first-generation Nakano Yokizou — and the presence is immediate. At 17.5" x 14" x 4", it has the footprint to carry a substantial tree, but what draws you in first is the form itself: bold, assured, and completely unfussy. The walls carry a smooth texture that only makes the heavy patina read more clearly — this pot has lived in collections, and it shows in the best possible way. The kind of surface accumulation you can't fake and wouldn't want to.
The hand-placed rivets are the other thing worth stopping on. Not decorative — deliberate. They speak to a tradition of repair and reverence, the pot considered worth keeping whole across generations. Nail-signed rather than chop-marked, which is exactly what you'd hope to see on a first-gen piece: personal, direct, and unambiguous as provenance. Show-quality condition throughout. If you're hunting for a centerpiece pot with real age and real character behind it, this one's hard to argue with.
