The painting never stops on this one. A whole waterside village wraps the pot in cobalt blue - pavilions and pine trees along the shore, sailboats on the water, mountains behind - with a painted geometric band running around the flared rim and across the feet.
Ito Gekkou is renowned for exactly this kind of fine sometsuke brushwork, and his painted landscapes are among the most sought-after on vintage Japanese pots. The painter's mark is painted on the base. White glazed interior, two drainage holes, four feet.
