Scale is what Gyouzan is known for above everything else, and at 18.5 by 16 inches this is the kiln doing the thing it is most famous for. That reputation is worth understanding. In Japan large pots are the exception rather than the rule. Living space is tight, gardens are small, and there is rarely room on a bench for a tree that needs a container this size, so most Japanese kilns built their names on shohin and smaller work. Gyouzan went the other way. American collectors, who tend to have both the room and the appetite for big dramatic trees, have been the beneficiaries, and it is a large part of why the kiln's work has found the following it has here.

The rim flares outward, which lifts the visual weight off a footprint this wide and stops the pot reading as a slab. The kiln sat in the mountains of Japan, far from the gallery circuit, and Yukizyou Nakano worked there quietly until his death. His son Yuuji has taken it on since. If you are checking the piece over, the details collectors use to recognise the kiln are cut corners rather than square ones, bold substantial feet, and drainage holes shaped and placed with more imagination than function strictly requires.

At 4 inches deep against a footprint that size, this is a shallow pot for its scale. That suits a wide, developed tree or a group planting rather than anything still building root volume. Unglazed is the convention for pines, junipers and trees with bark worth looking at, because the clay recedes behind them instead of answering the foliage, and Gyouzan clay has the weight and warmth to do that under a tree with real presence.
