17.5x14x4 Inch Gyouzan Rectangle Bonsai Pot #282 – Heavy Patina, Unglazed, Nail Signed
Details
A large unglazed rectangle from the Gyouzan kiln, and a nail signed one, which is the distinction that matters most here. Gyouzan produced both production pots and fully handmade pieces, and the nail signature is what separates the two. It is the first thing an experienced collector checks. This one carries the mark incised into the clay by hand rather than stamped, so it came from the potter's own bench.
The surface has taken on a heavy patina, the darkening and softening that comes only from years of watering and weather. It cannot be applied and it cannot be rushed, which is why collectors read it as evidence rather than decoration. Underneath, the form is bold and the texture smooth, with the substantial feet and deliberately cut corners the kiln is known for. Turn it over for the drainage holes as well. Gyouzan shaped and placed those with a whimsy no production kiln bothers with, and for many collectors that is the giveaway before the signature is even read.
At 17.5 by 14 inches and 4 inches deep this is a large pot, which is where Gyouzan made his name. Most Japanese kilns built their reputations on small and shohin work for sound practical reasons, since space at home is tight. Gyouzan went the other way. Four inches of depth suits a tree with an established root system, and the warm unglazed clay sits back and lets a developed conifer take the eye.
