9x9x5 Inch Suzuki Suzan Square Bonsai Pot #136 – Beveled Corners, Unglazed, Double Chop & Nail Signed
Details
A square unglazed pot from Suzuki Suzan, hand-carved with beveled corners. Suzan spent his career on a clay body of his own, imported and refined until it had structural strength without the mass that usually comes with it, which is why his pots tend to feel lighter in the hand than their size suggests. He left most of his work unglazed. When the clay is the achievement, covering it makes little sense.
The corners are the detail to look at. Beveling a square means cutting the edge back cleanly on all four sides with nothing to hide behind afterwards, and the smooth finish here invites exactly that inspection. It carries a double chop and a nail signature, the signature scratched into the clay by hand before firing rather than pressed in.
At 9 inches square and 5 inches deep this is a deep pot for its footprint. That depth is root volume, which suits a conifer, a literati trunk, or anything else where the tree needs the soil more than the composition needs to spread sideways. A square reads formal, so it pairs with a trunk confident enough to stand up to it.
