16x15.5x11 Inch Suzuki Suzan Square Bonsai Pot #212 – Hand Carved Windows, Unglazed, Chop Mark

This is the Suzan pot that does the whole trick at once. A large square, carved from a solid block of clay rather than built up from slabs, with windows cut by hand into the sides, corners incised rather than left plain, and walls thin enough that the weight in your hands will not match what your eyes told you to expect. That mismatch is the fastest way to recognise his work. Suzan spent his career refining an imported clay body for strength without mass, and a pot this size is where the achievement shows.

Cutting windows into a solid block means removing material from something that still has to hold together, and doing it at this scale with walls this thin leaves no room to correct a mistake. The corners get the same discipline. Nothing here is decorative that is not also structural, which is the Japanese restraint sitting on top of proportions borrowed from classic Chinese containers. The chop is on the base, and his is teapot-shaped once you know to look for it.

At 16 by 15.5 inches and 11 inches deep this is an exhibition pot. Eleven inches is a great deal of root volume, which puts it in cascade and semi-cascade territory, or under a large literati trunk, or any tree where the roots need the soil more than the composition needs to spread sideways. A square this size reads formal and commanding, so it wants a tree that can hold its own against it.
