15x9x1 Inch Sara Rayner Oval Bonsai Pot #10010 – Grey, Nail Signed

The depth is the first thing worth noticing. One inch, on a pot fifteen inches long. That is about as shallow as a bonsai container gets, and it narrows what belongs in it considerably. This is a pot for a developed root system that has stopped needing volume, or for a group planting where the soil is spread wide and thin across the whole tray. It is not a pot for a tree still in development.

Sara Rayner is by most accounts the most celebrated American bonsai potter working today, and our record places this among her older work. The early pieces are where the experimentation lives, made before her reputation caught up with her and demand pushed the work toward more pots, faster, with less deliberation on each one. A thin line runs around the rim here with a fine repeated detail set along it, and our record notes the whole run as undamaged.

The signature is incised, not stamped. She scratches her name into the clay while it is still wet, so the mark is unique to this pot and varies from one piece to the next. A chop is the opposite: pressed in, and identical across everything a kiln makes. The grey here is restrained by her standards, and that is worth saying, because range is the thing collectors talk about most with her. Rather than settling into one glaze and one form the way most potters do over a career, she kept moving, and a quiet piece like this sits at the far end of that range from the ones where greens break over warm gold and rust.
