4 Inch Deep Sara Rayner Round Bonsai Pot #10002 – Zippered Rim, Brown, Nail Signed
Details
A round pot from Sara Rayner in a soft brown, finished smooth. The rim is zippered and the feet are squared off rather than rounded, so the decoration sits at the top of the pot while the base stays plain. That gives it one point of interest instead of two competing ones. On her later work the feet became one of the most considered elements of the whole pot, and these are cut with that kind of attention.
Rayner is unusual among potters for having refused a signature. Most settle over a career into one glaze or one form that becomes theirs; her body of work runs in dozens of directions instead, each pot pursuing its own shape and surface. She signs by hand, scratching the mark into the clay rather than pressing in a stamp, so no two are quite alike.
At 4 inches deep this is a small pot with useful root volume for its footprint, which makes it more forgiving than a shallow round of the same width. The brown is quiet enough that it will not fight a conifer, though unglazed remains the convention there, and it sits comfortably with deciduous material. A round form reads informally, so it suits a trunk with some movement in it rather than a strictly upright one.
