Vintage Unglazed Square Bonsai Pot 9" Handcarved Double Chop
Details
Suzuki Suzan | Japan | Unglazed | Square | beveled corners, competition quality, Smooth texture
This is one of those pots that stops you mid-scroll. Nine inches square with a 5" depth, it sits in that ideal range for a substantial formal upright or a wide-spreading informal — plenty of real estate for serious nebari to breathe. The unglazed surface is handcarved, and the texture has that deliberate, worked quality you only get from a potter who knew exactly what they were doing. The beveled corners are crisp and confident, keeping the silhouette clean without softening it into something generic. This reads competition-quality in every dimension: the geometry is tight, the proportions are considered, and the footprint has the kind of authority that makes a strong tree look stronger.
The maker is unknown, but the pot is signed — double chop with a nail signature, which puts it solidly in the serious-collector tier regardless of attribution. Whoever threw and carved this had a practiced hand and apparently wanted credit for it. If you're someone who thinks hard about what goes under a show tree, this deserves a serious look.
