This one stopped me cold. A second-generation Yamaaki oval in near-perfect condition, and in ten-plus years of collecting I've only come across one other example that even comes close. If you know Yamaaki's work, you already understand why that matters.

The pot is substantial — 15" long by 12" wide and 4" deep — with a presence to match. The thick, flared rim carries decorative worm-eaten detail that reads as intentional texture rather than damage: the kind of surface character that collectors hunt for. The feet are choppy and confident, each one with its own handmade personality, grounding the pot without fussing about it. The unglazed clay body shows the honest warmth of well-fired stoneware, and the overall throwing and finishing reflect a maker at full command of the form. Corner and rim work is crisp where it should be, relaxed where it earns it.

Authentication doesn't get much cleaner than this: double chop marks paired with a nail signature, the hallmark of a signed second-generation Yamaaki piece. Condition is about as good as it gets for a pot of this age and caliber — no chips, no cracks, nothing that competes with the pot itself. This is a display-worthy piece that also has the scale to carry a serious collected tree. Museum quality is not a phrase I throw around.
